I am fascinated by the connection between the soul and singing.
I have been doing my own inner work since 2021 and have seen many correlations between singing and the workings of the Psyche. I learn so much about my inner life through working on my voice and vice-verse. I want to help others develop an active relationship with their souls by bringing awareness to the sensations in their bodies, their emotions, and their environment; listening for the pull of Psyche and being willing to express its desire.
In my teaching I offer technical corrections for vocal issues, and I strive to enable the student to have a deeper understanding of their own voice, thus allowing them to take ownership of their singing. I often ask, “What did you notice? How did that feel? What were you thinking or doing when you sang that phrase? If your sound was a living being how would it move in the room? What does it look like?”
Many of the issues I encounter are fear based, “It won’t sound good. I’ll sing the wrong pitch. I can’t reach that note, it’s too high.” I ask what this feels like in the body. The student replies, “Scary. Tightness in the chest. Restricted.” I invite the student to fully acknowledge this sensation and name it. Then I encourage them to say, for example, “Fear, I see you are with me today. Let’s be together, I want to hear what you have to say.” Further discussion of this kind often leads to the student revealing that they were discouraged from, or criticized for, singing as a child and gave it up a long time ago, or have been overly critical of themselves and thus limit their capabilities.
I get very excited when we reach this level of trust because I know the student is willing to dig deeper to try to achieve vocal freedom. When we combine technical and soulful work the results are tangible and the student leaves feeling more confident and has gained insight into their own psyche.
